Identity Signs

mleluong: I chose gender because I usually present very feminine in the way that I dress and do my makeup. I find confidence in the way I look, so expressing myself through my physical appearance is important to me.

canofdanchan: I chose ability because my chronic pain has been worsening over the years, so much so that I have to take meds for it. And especially in the winter, I wake up in pain almost everyday so it's a very subtle yet constant reminder.

peanutbrittles: I chose gender because I feel that my gender influences how I interact with others

deepchadha: I chose gender because I present as male, and as per standard conventions I conform to the expectations of presenting as male.

cs: I chose age because I am aware of how old I am and my current situation.

eluong97: I chose age because I have the privilege of enjoying my youth as a time to try different things and grow as an individual. I am also able-bodied and energetic, so I am able to do most of the things I want to do physically. As a young woman also, I also don't have to worry about things older women may worry about like the stigma on aging.

alexa: I chose ability because I've never been able to identify as a person who is differently abled.

dumplinggirl: I chose income because I often forget how privileged I am. I live comfortably and without needing to worry about most of my expenses because they're covered by my parents.

dannyphantom: I chose age because age is a social construct???? Also I have friends that are ages like 19-29, so age isn't something I pay attention to.

bbgirl: I chose I chose race because because I have white-passing privilege.

deepchadha: I chose sexuality because I am cis-het and hence have not felt scrutinized or observed due to that.

luongliveemily: I chose race because as a Sino-Vietnamese-American, I have never completely fit into Chinese-American, Vietnamese-American, or (white) American culture. Not many people know what "Sino-Vietnamese" is either,so questions about my race are always more complicated to answer as well.

emoeggtart: I chose gender because even though I present femininely, I don't necessarily identify as a woman. I do choose to identify as femme, but it's a nuanced identity that correlates with my sexuality (queer).

peanutbrittles: I chose race because I'm white, "technically", although don't necessarily appear to be to all.

rollinginthedeep: I chose income because many people think that since I am an international student, I come from money. However this is not the case and I would like if people understood that.

christina: I chose sexuality because I have been through situations where people misunderstand my sexuality, this is based on how I dress or how I present myself as more "dominant" or "masculine" when in reality it's just who I am as a person and it does not have anything to do with my sexuality.

dumplinggirl: I chose sexuality because most people perceive me as an innocent little girl, and that follows that I am "pure" when it comes to my sexual experience. Most people assume that I am straight.

alexa: I chose sexuality because my family is not inclusive of those who are not cis-het.

cs: I chose race because my family has always reminded me that I come from a Chinese background which makes up who I am today. They always tell me to be proud of my culture and to continue passing on the family history and to not lose cultural identity.

photonerd: I chose race because growing up with immigrant parents, Mexican culture was a huge part of my upbringing.

deepdishes: I chose gender because my family had a very clear difference between what boys were supposed to do, and what girls were supposed to.

vermillion: I chose ability because I was always expected to excel in school, extracurriculars, and exemplify a considerate, responsible daughter and sibling.

mleluong: I chose gender because as a female, my family has always policed my gender performance to make sure I behaved in traditionally feminine ways. My appearance is always judged by family members, I am compared to other female family members, and if I behave in ways that don't conform to gender norms, I am criticized.

canofdanchan: I chose income because I grew up in the silicon valley and was/am upper middle class my entire life. My parents are both college graduates, which made getting into and affording college super easy for me. I also have access to fresh food, clean water, and am not in danger of foreclosure. I am not and never will be in danger of being homeless.

alexa: I chose income because my family is quite wealthy.

sammy: I chose income because I think I am privilege in terms of my family income because I do feel that I have opportunities to travel and do things that I want to do.

deepchadha: I chose ability because since I am able-bodied and have no visible disabilities, I feel like I am taken more seriously during any conversation.

bbgirl: I chose race because I am white passing.

vermillion: I chose income because My parents are well-off, and because of that I have access to countless resources such as private lessons, extracurriculars, etc. I also am able to attend an extremely expensive private school.
